Ortiz Jr. Vs. Lubin From Fort Worth

WBC interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs) slaughtered challenger Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin (27-3, 19 KOs) by a second-round knockout in an anticlimactic headliner in the main event on Saturday night at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
‘The Hammer’ Lubin, 30, made a big mistake of shelling up against the ropes in round two. Ortiz Jr. took full advantage of the sitting duck Lubin, nailing him with a blizzard of punches to score a stoppage. The ref stepped in and halted it when he saw that Lubin was out on his feet. The time of the stoppage was at 1:30 in round two.
“This isn’t even my prime. I’m only going to get better from here,” said Vergil Jr. “He’s a great fighter, but there are levels. We’re ready for the best and want to fight the best. ‘Boots’ come over here. I think this is a fight that has to happen. This is it.”
“I’m going to show the world I’m the best in the world,” said Jaron Ennis. “I’m going to make you pay. You ain’t going to take nothing. I guarantee you I’m going to win. I got something for you. Yes. Eddie, where is the paper? It’s that time.”
“I’m ready,” said Ortiz Jr.

Darius Fulghum (14-1-1, 12 KOs) and David Stevens (15-2-1, 10 KOs) fought to an ugly 10-round majority draw in the super middleweight co-feature bout. The scores were 96-94 for Fulghum, 95-95, and 95-95. Boxing News 24 scored it for Stevens 6-4. He landed the harder, cleaner shots from the fourth round. Both fighters were doing a lot of holding. However, Fulghum, 29, seemed to be doing more down the stretch and using a lot of headlocks.
Amari Jones (15-0, 13 KOs) made quick work of Shady Gamhour (14-3, 9 KOs), knocking him out in the third round in a scheduled 10-round middleweight fight. Jones, 23, hurt the 35-year-old Swedish native with a left hook in the third, causing him to dip low. He then followed up with two fight hooks to drop him. The fight was then halted. The time of the stoppage was at 2:54 of round three.
Joshua Edwards (5-0, 5 KOs) stopped Zeno Vooris (5-2, 5 KOs) in the third round of a six-round heavyweight contest. Vooris’ corner chose to have the fight halted in round three.
Their fighter was cut over both eyes and was taking heavy punishment from the 25-year-old prospect Edwards. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:34 of round three. Despite getting an early stoppage, Edwards looked slow and robotic.
Against this level of opponent, Edwards should have been able to knock him out in the first round. The reason he couldn’t was his slow hand speed and his mechanical style of fighting.
Robin Sirwan Safar (19-0, 13 KOs) was forced to go the 10-round distance to defeat previously unbeaten Derick Miller Jr (18-1, 10 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision in a one-sided cruiserweight contest. The scores were 98-91, 99-90, and 99-90. The 32-year-old Swedish native Safar had Miller hurt in the tenth and final round by unloading with hard punches in the last 20 seconds of the fight.
Eric Priest (16-0-1, 8 KOs) and Esneiker Correa (16-6-3, 14 KOs) fought to an eight-round split draw in a middleweight fight. The scores were 69-73 for Priest, 77-75 for Correa, and 76-75. Priest, 26, only has himself to blame for not getting the win because he took the final round off, allowing the Venezuelan native Correa to dominate the action with his aggression.
Correa came on strong in the last two rounds, fighting hard, landing uppercuts, and making Priest fight harder than he wanted to.
Javier Meza (5-0, 2 KO) out-punched Joshua Briones (3-5, 2 KO), winning a six-round unanimous decision in a light welterweight contest. The scores were 59-55, 58-55, and 58-55. Briones spent much of the fight with his back against the ropes, moving around the ring. However, he still landed some big shots on the easy-to-hit Meza. In the sixth, Briones hurt Meza with a hard right to the head that had him holding on.
Samuel Torres Castellanos (4-0, 3 KOs) scored a second-round TKO win over Ricardo Elizalde (0-2 0 KOs) in a scheduled four-round bout at junior middleweight. The 20-year-old Castellano dropped Elizalde with a hard shot. It was a delayed reaction.
Seconds after the action resumed, Elizalde’s corner had the fight halted. It was a weird situation because he wasn’t hit with anything. The time of the stoppage was at 1:55 of round two.
Ezlizalde had been fighting with his hands down by his sides, choosing to move, pose, and clinch frequently. There wasn’t much of anything that landed in round one due to Elozalde’s reluctance to fight.
